Overview

AHK-Cu (Alanyl-Histidyl-Lysine copper complex) is a biomimetic copper tripeptide designed for cosmetic and trichological research. Structurally related to the well-studied GHK-Cu, AHK-Cu was specifically optimised for research into hair follicle biology and dermal papilla cell function. The copper ion is chelated by the histidine and lysine residues, providing stability while remaining bioavailable for copper-dependent enzymatic processes. AHK-Cu has shown particular promise in in vitro studies examining dermal papilla cell proliferation and hair growth cycle signalling.

Mechanism of Action

AHK-Cu stimulates dermal papilla cell proliferation via activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway, which is a master regulator of the hair follicle growth cycle (anagen induction). The copper ion serves as a cofactor for lysyl oxidase (essential for extracellular matrix cross-linking in the follicular niche) and superoxide dismutase (protecting rapidly dividing follicular cells from oxidative damage). AHK-Cu also upregulates VEGF expression in dermal papilla cells, promoting perifollicular angiogenesis that supports the metabolic demands of active hair growth.
