Overview

Epitalon (Epithalon, epithalamin) is a synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) based on the natural peptide epithalamin, originally extracted from the pineal gland. It was developed by Vladimir Khavinson at the Saint Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology and has been studied for over two decades in the context of ageing and telomere biology. Epitalon is one of the few peptides reported to activate telomerase (hTERT) in human somatic cells, placing it at the centre of cellular senescence and longevity research.

Mechanism of Action

Epitalon activates telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT), the catalytic subunit of telomerase, enabling the addition of TTAGGG hexanucleotide repeats to the ends of chromosomes. Telomere shortening is a hallmark of cellular ageing — when telomeres reach a critical length, cells enter replicative senescence or apoptosis. By reactivating telomerase in somatic cells (where it is normally silenced), epitalon has been shown to extend the replicative lifespan of human fetal fibroblasts by approximately 10 additional population doublings. It may also stimulate melatonin secretion by the pineal gland, connecting it to circadian rhythm and antioxidant research.
